The Sum of Nigel is registered as a non-profit organization under its new name: Fair Shot Inc.

As an Action Group for Educational Equity, it provides free STEM education, campaigns for college completion, boosts college access and success, and promotes STEM career readiness programs.

It impacts the children of Siargao Island with a free, high-quality school and supports the academic and athletic achievement of the island’s most promising surfing prodigies.

Leveraging the collective impact of volunteers from the Philippines and across the globe, Fair Shot Inc. mentors high school seniors to help them obtain college admission, scholarship grants, and ultimately, succeed in college.

It is the first Philippine NGO that utilizes mentoring as the cornerstone approach to get young people interested in, plan toward, persist, and thrive in STEM-related educational and career opportunities.

To optimize its impact, Fair Shot creates innovative STEM modules for struggling LaSallian students, provides tablets to support the online education of disadvantaged students and offers free art therapy to teens suffering from the mental health ramifications of the pandemic.

As is known, Typhoon Rai rained down devastation upon Southern Philippines. In Siargao, no structure was left standing or spared damage. The toll: P24b in damages and with schools destroyed, the setbacks to education are nearly insurmountable.

The island has been counting on Espoir School to help its vast pool of young people become the wellspring of future growth. Now two years into the pandemic and an annihilating typhoon, the demographic dividend is looking more like a lost generation.

As 2022 wears on, The Sum of Nigel persists to work with Espoir towards regenerative pathways to education, ensuring quality and equity.

So, help us provide sustainable interventions to the students of Siargao. Help us rebuild their school. Donate today.

As 2022 wears on, we push to expand our reach in ways that are just as personal to us as education. The direction we chose tied closely to one of my personal endeavors: writing a science-cum-art book about teaching Physics to a dog.

All book proceeds will be donated to Animal Rescue PH, an NGO run by no more than two people, a husband and wife team, dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs and cats that are stray or feral — abandoned to disease, starvation, and inevitable death.

When Typhoon Karding pummeled Central Luzon, Animal Rescue PH's makeshift and never finished animal shelter in San Miguel, Bulacan was severely damaged, adding construction materials into their insurmountable list of needs, and leaving these rescues with little food and no refuge.

So, in partnership with The FairBuilding Network and with the generosity of Summex Trading Corporation, the Sum of Nigel donated construction supplies to help build the shelter of Animal Rescue PH.

The Sum of Nigel has also started its monthly support to feed all 200 dogs at the shelter.

THE SUM OF NIGEL PODCAST

When we spoke with larger-than-life celebrities, we sought to understand which factors, life events, and support systems were involved in how they became the impactful and phenomenal role models that we look up to. And it became clear that education, and the manner in which their education was supported, played a pivotal role in each of their success stories.
